Well, as they say, the shiat has hit the fan at the nations VA hospitals!
Surprise, surprise… no, not really. This has been predicted by myself and thousands of other Vets. And also by much, if not nearly all of the true workers at the VA. The administration can duck and weave all they want, by the shiat is all over their faces, where it belongs. What is sad is that it took a non-story about the deploring physical condition of the once world class medical center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center to bring this story to the front. I say the non-story because the Congress knew that Walter Reed was placed on the base closure list in 2005.
Congress put the Medical Center on the list! Oh such a short memory they have. As any sane person knows, you don’t spend mega-millions on a base that is going to close, so what did they think was going to happen? No money, no upkeep. Pretty simple concept, that is to everyone but the same politicians who are screaming “off with the administrations head”! Please, please Congress, do take responsibility yourselves, don’t point your finger at everyone else (as you always do).
Now for my favorite topic of disgrace, the pathetic level of care at the nations VA Medical Centers and Salisbury in particular. Salisbury VA, AKA W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center. On Friday March 9, 2007, a story was published on the Charlotte.com website about 2 veterans who had died at this Medical Center due to what was described as, putting it nicely “The doctors screwed up. The nurses screwed up”. One vet was 68, the other only 41. The following day, the same news site reported that U.S. Rep. Mel “The Useless” Watt called for a review of “suspicious deaths” at the Salisbury V.A.
What a hypocrite. Mel “The Useless” knew the care at the medical center was substandard and yet he did nothing. As usual. And as usual, he wants a report. Of course a report was done in 2005 after “an anonymous complaint about 12 suspicious death at the hospital” but it would appear that “The Useless” didn’t get a copy of the report. Guess he doesn’t read the newspaper either. What a well informed member of congress he is. Oh, and what was the report on the remaining 10 deaths? Seems to have gotten buried some place. Or, perhaps it is with so many of the other lost records at the VA???
That report blasted the Salisbury VAMC stating that the hospital should take “immediate appropriate action to ensure patient safety”. The report went on to say there was “a gross lack of leadership at almost every level, certainly medically. You should just be appalled at the whole situation”. Those remarks came from Oscar Aylor, a professor at UNC Chapel Hill.
And, as usual, the VA hospital’s interim director Sidney Steinburg claims the report “not true or reflective of what we did”. He reported that “the hospital replaced at least three doctors and a chief nurse a MONTH after the report”. “At least three doctors. He doesn’t know for sure how many HE replaced?
Of course, no one will ever get to the heart of the problem if they talk to the “Powers That Be” in administration. All of these members of congress and Former Senator Robert Dole need to get out and talk with the people who really see the shortfalls of the system. They need to talk with “working staff”. The doctors, PA’s, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists and the other employees who see what goes on from the trenches every day. Not with administration who only see through the rose colored glasses.
They need to ask the staff how many people are on a scheduled tour but don’t show up because they are on duty with the military or extended sick leave. The Chief’s will tell you they have plenty of staff, see, look at the numbers on the paper here. But if you go on the wards they will find a completely different picture. The true picture. There may be only 2 or 3 people actually working because the others are on leave. And again, administration will say, no way, look at the numbers on the PAPER!
The investigators should also talk with the patients who have waited months to get an appoint. Or the vet’s who have been placed on “lists” for services. Some of these lists never appear to move. Ask them about the lost records, long waiting times, and endless other delays in getting the care they are entitled to.
Only when the real working troops are asked, “how’s it going” will they get the true answers of the deplorable condition of our Veterans health care system!
